Since the beginning of time, people have been drawn to the beauty of scent. Whether formulated with intoxicating notes of flowers or earthy Eastern fragrance families, perfume has always made a statement. When exploring fragrances, you’ll typically see them described as “eau de parfum” or “eau de toilette.” The difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette indicates the concentration of fragrance and how long the scent lasts on the skin.
Eau de parfum vs. eau de toilette
Although fragrances come in what seems like myriad formats and styles, knowing the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette will help you determine the concentration of fragrance that best suits your needs. Modern perfume is made when a concentrated combination of scents is combined with a mixture of ethanol and water, which dilutes the perfume extract into a lighter, more palatable fragrance.
Sometimes known as “pure perfume,” parfum contains the highest concentration of perfume extract—typically 20% to 30%.” Some very powerful parfums may last even after a shower! They are not as prevalent as the other concentrations, due to the higher cost of manufacturing. They are often sold in small amounts (7 to 15mls) and in bottles for dabbing, because every drop is so precious (and pricey.) The brand that makes a parfum believes in its appeal to a loyal consumer base. The fragrance enthusiast that purchases the parfum loves the overall presentation of the scent and bottle — the latter is like an objet d’art on her night table.
Eau de parfum typically contains 15% to 20% perfume extract, giving it more intensity and staying power after application. It may be sold in bottles for dabbing on or as a vaporisateur spray, and can last up to eight hours. When you are able to smell a pleasant scent on a blouse that was worn days ago, it is most likely the remnants of the powerful base notes of eau de parfum (or perhaps a parfum!)
Eau de toilette is less concentrated, with 5% to 15% perfume extract. From the French phrase meaning “grooming water,” eau de toilette is lighter in fragrance and not as long-lasting as eau de parfum, typically lasting just a few hours. It’s considered more suitable for day wear and less pure than eau de parfum. Many wearers of eau de toilette re-apply the fragrance several times per day for continued fragrance.
There are additional, specialized formulations within the fragrance industry, such as Chance Eau Fraîche by Chanel, a light floral fragrance, and Eau de Cologne Hermès, which hearkens to its traditional roots with herbal and citrus notes. The conventional meaning behind eau de cologne refers not only to its essential fragrance, but also to its much lower perfume concentration. Eau Fraiche, the lightest classification for fragrances, typically comprises only 1% to 3% pure perfume and lasts just a couple of hours on the skin.

How to wear eau de parfum
Many eau de parfum fragrances are dispensed as a vaporisateur spray, which uses pressure to release a fine spray in a set amount per pump. For the longest-lasting results, apply vaporisateur spray directly to the body (rather than spraying the air and walking through it). Never rub wrists together — the friction can break down the scent. Simply apply fragrances to bare, moisturized skin at pulse points and do nothing more. Our classic and signature Hope fragrance is perfect for this type of everyday application.
If you live in an extremely hot climate, consider spritzing eau de parfum onto a scarf or in your hair so that sweat doesn’t break down the fragrance. Hope Sport works beautifully on hair or clothing when you’re on the go, and it’s formulated not to leave stains. For a romantic touch, a light spritz of perfume like Hope Night behind the ears can set the tone for the evening, especially for those who stay close to you. No matter how you wear your favorite scent, you’ll be treating yourself to a beauty ritual that’s as old as time itself.

Do you give or sell small sample vials of the fragrances? I would like to try the Hope Night, but don’t want to buy it until I can experience the scent. Please let me know the answer to my question. Thank you.
